September 27, 2013 - Landsat 7 Thermal Band Calibration Update

Effective October 1, 2013, the calibration of the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) Band 6 will be updated to correct a bias error that has been present in all thermal data since the last calibration update in 2010. Vicarious calibration teams detected a bias error of 0.036 watts per square meter steradian micron  (W/(m2 sr µm)) that causes overestimation of top-of-atmosphere temperatures by approximately 0.26 Kelvin (K) at 300K. Calibration parameters within the Calibration Parameter File (CPF) have been adjusted to correct for this bias error. (Read More)

September 16, 2013 - Notice of Landsat 8 Data Reprocessing

The Landsat project has determined that a bias correction needs to be applied to Landsat 8 thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) band 10 (10.3 - 11.3 um) data. The USGS plans to reprocess all Landsat 8 data that have been acquired to date with the updated bias in the near future. More details about data changes and the schedule will be posted on the web site within the upcoming weeks.

October 30, 2012 - Landsat TM data removed from downloadable state

All Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes were removed from downloadable state on October 29, 2012, to resolve issues with thermal band 6 processing. Any previously placed requests for TM data will need to be resubmitted for processing. We apologize for this inconvenience. Please Contact Us with any questions or concerns about this.

October 26, 2012 - Landsat 5 Thermal band 6 issues

Issues have been identified with thermal band 6 of Landsat Thematic Mapper processed data, due to the Calibration Parameter File (CPF) updates implemented on October 1, 2012. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Please Contact Us with any questions or concerns about this.

March 13, 2011 - Pending MSS and L4 TM Calibration Release

In the upcoming weeks, the Landsat Project will incorporate new radiometric enhancements for all Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) and Landsat 4 Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal data. A notice will be posted when the new calibrations are released in early April. At that time, all processed MSS and Landsat 4 TM data will be purged from the servers in order to ensure that all future MSS and L4 TM data have the new calibrations applied.

February 16, 2010 - New release date for 30-meter thermal

The new Landsat 30-m pixel size for thermal data, mentioned in the February 9, 2010 announcement, will be delayed until February 25, 2010.

February 9, 2010 - Thermal Data to be Resampled to 30 meters

Commercial software has difficulty aligning the 30 meter multispectral data of Landsats 4-7 with the dissimilar thermal pixel sizes. This forces users of the Landsat thermal band to resample data. To remedy this issue, the USGS will set the pixel size for all thermal data at 30 meters as of February 17, 2010. Details are located on page 17 of the Landsat Update Volume 4 Issue 1.

January 28, 2010 - Calibration update to ETM+ thermal band

Effective January 1, 2010, the calibration of the ETM+ thermal band was modified to correct for a lifetime gain error detected by the vicarious calibration teams. Changes were made to the Calibration Parameter File (CPF) to correct a gain error that has been present since the launch of the instrument. (Read More)

June 22, 2006 – The Revised Draft Imagery Requirements supplement for the thermal imaging option

The Revised Draft Imagery Requirements supplement for the thermal imaging option was made available for review and comment. The Imagery Requirements supplement is a subset of the Space Segment Requirements Document. It contains only the algorithm, spectral band, radiometry, and geometric instrument requirements.

May 10, 2006 – Thermal Imaging Draft Requirements Supplement

The Draft Imagery Requirements supplement for the thermal imaging option is now available for review and comment. The Imagery Requirements supplement is a subset of the Space Segment Requirements Document. It contains only the algorithm, spectral band, radiometry, and geometric instrument requirements.

About

Landsat represents the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data. Four decades of imagery provides a unique resource for those who work in agriculture, geology, forestry, regional planning, education, mapping, and global change research. Landsat images are also invaluable for emergency response and disaster relief.
