February 16, 2016 – Landsat Phase 2 Ground Control Points Updates Complete

The reprocessing effort that started in January 2016 to update the Phase 2 Ground Control Points is now complete.

Phase 2 updates affect 1,151 WRS-2 paths/rows, covering island areas and inland regions where the estimated absolute accuracy of the original Global Land Survey 2000 (GLS2000) ground control varied between 50 to 75 meters.

January 7, 2016 - Phase 2 Ground Control Point Updates to be implemented

In 2015, we provided information about the Phase 2 Ground Control Points plan. Starting the week of January 11, 2016, data for the affected path/rows will be reprocessed to implement the new GCPs. (Read More)

September 2, 2014 - Landsat metadata (MTL) and Ground Control Point (GCP) changes starting September 3

Landsat MTL changes including MTL padding and Ground Control Point (GCP) MTL versioning, and GCP updates will go into affect starting the afternoon of September 3, 2014. For more information please visit the July 9, 2014 and July 23, 2014 Mission Headlines.

July 23, 2014 - Ground Control Point (GCP) versioning to be added to Landsat Metadata (MTL) file

The version number of the GCPs used to register an image will be recorded in the MTL file following the next processing system release in September 2014. The Landsat Project is in the process of improving the ground control points (GCPs) used to georegister Landsat products. (Read More)

July 1, 2014 - Ground Control Points to be Updated

In September 2014, the Landsat Project will be updating Ground Control Points (GCPs) for 171 paths/rows for data from all Landsat missions. (Read More)


January 16, 2014 - New Ground Control Points for Select Landsat 8 Scenes

New Ground Control Points (GCPs) will become available for three WRS-2 path/rows and GCPs contained within large water bodies will be removed on February 3, 2014 to coincide with the Landsat 8 archive reprocessing. As a consequence of the improved GCPs, scenes once created as a systematic Level-1GT (L1GT) product may now process to a precision Level-1T (L1T) product.

November 20, 2013 - New Ground Control Available Soon for Select Path/Rows

New Ground Control Points (GCPs) will become available for a number of WRS-1 and WRS-2 path/rows on December 5, 2013. This will affect Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM), and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data. (Read More)
