April 3, 2017 – Upcoming Changes to Landsat Pre-Collection Processing

Effective April 30, 2017, newly-acquired Landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS scenes will be processed into the Landsat Collection 1 inventory structure only; Landsat Pre-Collection datasets will no longer be populated with new data. Users are strongly encouraged to use the Landsat Collection 1 datasets, as eventually all Pre-Collection datasets will be removed from EarthExplorer

March 16, 2017 – Elevation discrepancy prompts reprocessing of Landsat 7 Antarctic data

During Collection 1 Level-1 data processing of Landsat 7 ETM+ scenes covering Antarctica, it was discovered that about 2,700 scenes were processed using incorrect elevation data. While acquisition dates vary, the majority of scenes affected were acquired between January 2000 and January 2001. During the week of March 20, 2017, these data will be reprocessed with correct elevation information and will be repopulated on EarthExplorer. This file lists the affected scenes that will be reprocessed.

April 12, 2016 - Upcoming Landsat 8 TIRS Reprocessing Information

Toward the end of April, reprocessing efforts will begin for Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS scenes acquired from January 1 to March 31, along with data acquired during April, to create nominal Level-1 products containing valid TIRS data.  Additionally, all future Landsat 8 scenes will contain valid TIRS data—however, newly processed data will use preliminary estimated position information from the TIRS scene select mirror (SSM). January 7, 2016 - Phase 2 Ground Control Point Updates to be implemented

In 2015, we provided information about the Phase 2 Ground Control Points plan. Starting the week of January 11, 2016, data for the affected path/rows will be reprocessed to implement the new GCPs. (Read More)

October 21, 2015 - Upcoming Processing System Updates and Landsat Data Changes

In late November 2015, updates to the Landsat processing system will be released resulting in changes to the data products. These updates and changes are documented in the latest Landsat Update.

May 28, 2015 - Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Processing Resumes

Surface Reflectance processing has resumed for Landsat 8 scenes acquired after December 18, 2014. The higher level processing was suspended during the thermal sensor (TIRS) side-b electronics swap. See the Landsat Higher Level Science Data Products Web page for more details.

May 18, 2015 - Landsat 8 TIRS Reprocessing Complete

The reprocessing effort to provide valid thermal data for Landsat 8 scenes acquired December 19, 2014 to March 13, 2015 has been completed. The reprocessing was done in response to the TIRS side-b electronics swap that is documented on the May 8, 2015 Calibration Notice.

April 23, 2015 - Landsat 8 Data Processing Changes

New production code was released today to enhance the usability of Landsat 8 products. Some of the planned changes were postponed in favor of coordinating new features in Landsat 8 with similar changes in Landsats 4-7 TM and ETM+ scheduled for the fall/winter of 2015. Other features expected to impact users have also been added since the last Landsat Update published February 27. Please see this month's Landsat Update for details.

March 20, 2015 - Attention Landsat Data Users

The Landsat 1-7 browse and full resolution browse products for MSS, TM and ETM+ data need to be reprocessed to correct a recent problem. The issue should be resolved by March 23, 2015. This Landsat browse problem does not affect the quality or usability of other Landsat data downloads.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.

March 16, 2015 - Landsat 8 Thermal Data Processing Resumed

On March 13, 2015 at 4:00 pm CT, processing of Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data resumed. The newly processed data includes the revised Calibration Parameter Files established after the mechanism control electronics (MCE) swap on March 2, 2015. Investigations are continuing to improve the data product, and reprocessing of TIRS data acquired since December 19, 2014 is still planned according to the March 6, 2015 Headline.

March 13, 2015 - Landsat Data Processing Changes Scheduled

On Tuesday March 17, 2015, the changes described in the recent Landsat Update will be implemented, starting at 8 am CT and lasting for up to four hours. Newly acquired Landsat 7 data will be processed and made available when the systems resume nominal operations. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

January 28, 2015 - Important Information about Upcoming Landsat Data Processing Changes

During Spring 2015, significant changes to Landsat products will improve the consistency of Landsat 4-8 data records. These changes will enhance data usability. The planned changes, potential impacts, and benefits are summarized on the recently published Landsat Update.

January 21, 2015 - Recent Landsat 7 data changed

On Monday, January 19, 2015 (DOY 19) at 03:14:07 GMT, Gap Phase Statistic (GPS) errors were discovered in the compilation of Landsat 7 ETM+ Level-1 data products. Data processing was temporarily suspended until late afternoon January 20, 2015. (Read More)
