Automated Detection of Cloud and Cloud Shadow in Single-Date Landsat Imagery Using Neural Networks and Spatial Post-Processing
http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rs6064907
This dataset was originally created by M. Joseph Hughes, Oregon State University, and was derived manually from Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) scenes. Its purpose was to validate cloud and cloud shadow masking derived from the Spatial Procedures for Automated Removal of Cloud and Shadow (SPARCS) algorithm. Each product is provided as a thematic raster, and includes the classes of “cloud”, “cloud shadow”, “snow/ice”, ”water”, and ”flooded”. While these validation images were subjectively digitized by a single analyst, they provide useful information for quantifying the accuracy of clouds flagged by various cloud masking algorithms. Each mask is a 1000 pixel by 1000 pixel subset of an original Landsat Level-1 scene. The mask and accompanying color composite preview image are provided in PNG image format, and includes all bands from the original Landsat Level-1 data (GeoTIFF band-interleaved by pixel (BIP)), Landsat Level-1 quality band (GeoTIFF), and its associated Level-1 metadata (MTL.txt file).
The dataset was derived to validate cloud and cloud shadow masking derived from the Spatial Procedures for Automated Removal of Cloud and Shadow (SPARCS) algorithm.

Data were derived empirically, thus contain error subjective to the analyst.
All Landast Level-1 data products provided here are radiometrically unmodified from their source, but are subset to 1000 pixel by 1000 pixel chips. The validation masks have no geographic information applied, but are identical in size and extent to the Landsat Level-1 data product from which they are derived.
Horizontal positional accuracy was not modified from the original Landsat Level-1 data.
Lab
All data are derived directly from radiometrically unmodified Landsat Level-1 data products. The Landsat Level-1 data products are subset to 1000 pixel by 1000 pixel chips. The cloud validation mask digitization was performed by one analyst.

Cloud validation masks were derived directly from the Landsat Level-1 Data Product.
Data were manually digitized by a single operator. World Reference System-2 (WRS-2) path/rows were selected randomly within each of the 14 World Wildlife Fund terrestrial Major Habitat Types, which occur in each of the seven Biogeographical Realms.
