Indonesia's National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) is part of the Remote Sensing Affairs agency. There are centers operated by LAPAN: the Remote Sensing Data Center and the Remote Sensing Application and Technology Development Center. These two centers provide the following services related to remote sensing:

  • Earth monitoring and information systems for mitigation of natural disasters;
  • Remote sensing data services;
  • Inventory of natural resources;
  • Remote sensing programs to support business;
  • Remote sensing innovation and creativity;
  • Remote sensing technology development; and
  • Training and other LAPAN remote sensing activities.

The ground station operated by LAPAN currently receives the following datasets:

  • SPOT 4
  • MODIS (Aqua and Terra)
  • LANDSAT 7 (inactive since July 10, 2007)

Landsat represents the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data. Four decades of imagery provides a unique resource for those who work in agriculture, geology, forestry, regional planning, education, mapping, and global change research. Landsat images are also invaluable for emergency response and disaster relief.
