December 24, 2014 - Landsat 8 Data Update

Landsat 8 Level-1 data products continue to be generated and contain valid Operational Land Imager (OLI) data; however the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) band data will consist of zero-fill and will be unusable at this time. Details on the TIRS data can be found in the December 19 and December 22, 2014 Headlines. This will be the standard Landsat 8 product content until further notice.

December 23, 2014 - Provisional Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Data Available

Provisional Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) Surface Reflectance (SR) data products are now available through the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) On Demand Interface and EarthExplorer. (Read More)

December 22, 2014 - TIRS Level-1 Processing is Still Suspended

The configuration of the TIRS instrument on Landsat 8 remains unchanged since the detection of anomalous current levels associated with the scene select mirror (SSM) encoder electronics. (Read More)

December 19, 2014 - TIRS Calibration Reconfiguration

At 10:34 am (CST) the configuration of the TIRS instrument on Landsat 8 was reconfigured due to detection of anomalous current levels associated with the scene select mirror encoder electronics. (Read More)

December 17, 2014 - Landsat 8 Processing Resumed

Landsat 8's Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) returned to its normal operating mode December 13, 2014 after completing a TIRS test activity that began December 9, 2014. (Read More)

December 9, 2014 - Temporary Delays of Landsat 8 Processing

As of December 9, 2014 at 00:00 UTC (6:00 pm CST), Landsat 8 operations staff began necessary TIRS testing which caused a delay in the routine processing of OLI/TIRS image data. Landsat 8 has continued to acquire OLI and TIRS instrument data according to normal scheduling. (Read More)

December 8, 2014 - Geometric Excellence of Landsat 8 Highlighted

Excellent geolocation and internal geometric performance of the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on board Landsat 8 permit all Landsat images to be georegistered accurately. Even L1Gt data products without the ground control (nighttime or ocean data, images with very little land and heavy clouds) needed to create a “precision-corrected” L1T data product can be accurately georegistered. December 3, 2014 - Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Climate Data Record Development Nears Completion

By the end of 2014, Prototype Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) Surface Reflectance (SR) Climate Data Records (CDRs) will be available through the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) On Demand Interface.  As currently produced for Landsat 4-5 and Landsat 7 scenes, product options such as top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance, surface reflectance (SR), and SR-based spectral indices will be available for Landsat 8 scenes.

Details about Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance CDRs are now available.

November 10, 2014 - Website and Data Downloads Unavailable Thursday, November 13, 2014 4:00 pm CT

Due to power system maintenance, this website will become unavailable on Thursday, November 13, 2014 starting at 4:00 pm CT. The outage is expected to last for up to eight hours. Data downloads will also be unavailable during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience.

November 4, 2014 - Landsat Ghostbusters

Shortly after the launch of Landsat 8, the Landsat calibration team noticed something strange: bright and dark stripes, or “banding” was showing up across certain images collected by the satellite’s Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). NASA has provided a very informative article about these 'ghosting' artifacts.

October 31, 2014 - Updates made to the LandsatLook Viewer

The LandsatLook Viewer is a prototype tool that was developed to allow rapid online viewing and access to the USGS Landsat image archives. The Viewer enables interactive exploration of Landsat 1-8 imagery at up to full resolution using only a web browser. (Read More)
