Question:
How do I search and download ascending (nighttime) scenes?

Answer:

Nighttime (ascending path) Landsat scenes can be searched and downloaded or requested through EarthExplorer.

It is necessary to know the ascending path for which you are searching. Ascending path numbers are not the same as descending path (daytime) numbers.

If the ascending path/row is known, follow the steps below.

If the ascending path/row is not known, access the WRS-2 Path/Row to Latitude/Longitude Converter at http://landsat.usgs.gov/tools_latlong.php and then follow the steps below.

  1. Select your Dataset (L7 SLC-off, L7 SLC-on, Landsat 4-5 TM).
  2. In the Additional Search Criteria for each dataset, enter the path/row range, and change the Day_Night selection to Night. Click OK.
  3. Select Number of Results.
  4. Submit the Search.

Once the results are returned, scenes can either be downloaded or a request can be submitted for processing.

*Cloud cover values for night scenes will always be zero for Landsat 7 images. Please see http://landsat.usgs.gov/cloud_cover_reported_as_0_00_night_scenes.php for more information.
