Question:
How do I search and download ascending (nighttime) scenes?

Answer:

Ascending (nighttime) Landsat scenes can be searched and downloaded or requested through USGS EarthExplorer two different ways:

Using a geographic location:

Select your Dataset (L7 SLC-off, L7 SLC-on and/or Landsat 4-5 TM).
In the Additional Search Criteria for each dataset, change the Day_Night selection to Night. Click OK.
Click the map over your area of interest. Please note: Searching by latitude/longitude coordinates or by Place name for night images does not work at this time.
Select your desired Number of Results to be returned.
Submit the Search.

Once the images are listed, you can either download the scenes that are available or submit a request to have the scenes made available for download. Please be aware that the cloud-cover values for night scenes will always be zero for Landsat 7 images. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Using a known WRS ascending path/row*:

Select your Dataset (L7 SLC-off, L7 SLC-on and/or Landsat 4-5 TM).
In the Additional Search Criteria for each dataset, enter the path/row range, and change the Day_Night selection to Night. Click OK.
Select your desired Number of Results to be returned.
Submit the Search.

*To learn the Path/Row over your area of interest, use the Lat/Long to WRS converter at http://landsat.usgs.gov/tools_latlong.php
